What I experienced was a freezing at the login page. This occurred after I shutdown the system with the power button. The shutdown procedure was stuck for some reason and eating my CPU (according to the fan speed and heat).

The solution was to execute: sed ‘s/quiet/quiet nouveau.modeset=0/g’ -i /etc/default/grub, update grub and reboot. Then I removed nvidia drivers with apt-get purge nvidia-* and deleted the X11 config /etc/X11/xorg.conf. ACPI is enabled by default by my bios and can’t be unselected. I did not turn acpi off in grub.

Basically when I boot up, I can see the GUI and login page, but as soon as I try and login it just freezes. I switched to the terminal by pressing CTRL-3, and I used htop and I checked dmesg and other log files but I can’t find any reason why it would be crashing.

I recently changed the default kali username and password via following a tutorial that used usermod commands. However, after logging back into the newly named account, the screen freezes on the wallpaper and is not responsive.

Shutdown the virtual machine. Click on the settings for the virtual and allot twice the amount of ram you have allotted (If your host machine can handle it) and also set the CPU to four cores (Also under the settings menu). Now start up the virtual machine. It should fix the problem.

I powered on this virtual machine and Kali Linux boots as usual then login screen appeared. But when I tried to type username it almost freezed . It failed to take input from keyboard and it only blinking one time when mouse points at that area , nothing further.

One of the most common causes of Kali Linux freezing is incorrect system permissions. This usually occurs when you have installed Kali Linux onto a system that already has another operating system installed. If this is the case, then you will need to ensure that the permissions for the Kali Linux installation are set correctly.

Kali boots up fine, but then freezes after using it for a little. I allocated about 4 GB RAM and I have 32 GB on my host OS. Not sure what can be going on, but getting pretty annoyed at re-updating Kali, for it to freeze and not work again.
